Swiss startup Sun-Ways has been given permission to test the first removable solar panels on railway tracks. However, there are concerns about the safety of this project. The trial will take place on a track in the western canton of Neuchâtel, Switzerland, over a three-year period starting in spring 2025. The solar panels will be rolled out like a carpet between the tracks and can be easily removed. While the initial project is small, Sun-Ways aims to expand this technology globally.

ISRO successfully launched the PROBA-3 mission, which studies the Sun's orbit with an 'occulting' device

They believe that 50% of the world's railway lines could be equipped with their system. This innovative approach to solar panel installation builds upon similar experiments conducted on roadsides, reservoirs, and farms. Other companies are also exploring adding solar panels to railway sleepers. However, Sun-Ways is the first to patent a removable system, making it unique in the industry. This removable feature is essential for the regular maintenance of railway tracks.

How will it work?

A special train, made by a Swiss company, will lay solar panels along the train tracks. This train rolls along the tracks, unfurling pre-made solar panels. It can lay up to 1,000 square meters of panels each dayFor three years, a test will be done on a 100-meter track. 48 solar panels will be added, costing about €623,000. The electricity produced will be sent to the main power grid to supply homes. Using it for trains is more complex.

What is a Blue Moon: Astronomy Facts, Frequency & Live Quiz

Blue Moon: The Science and History Behind the Rare Lunar Event

What is a Blue Moon? A Blue Moon is a rare astronomical phenomenon when there are two full moons in a single calendar month. This typically occurs every two to three years. The term "Blue Moon" is believed to have originated from a misunderstanding of the old English phrase "Once in a blue moon." This saying was originally used to mean "never" or "very rarely," but it was later adopted to describe this beautiful event that happens once in a while.

Why do Blue Moons occur?

Blue Moons occur because the lunar cycle (synodic month), which is about 29.5 days long, does not always align perfectly with the standard solar calendar month of 30 or 31 days. When a full moon falls near the very beginning of a month, there is a high statistical probability that a second full moon will appear right before the month ends.

Is the moon actually blue during a Blue Moon?

No, the moon does not change its physical color to blue during a Blue Moon. The name is simply a lyrical reference to the rarity of the event. However, on rare historic occasions, the moon can actually appear to have a bluish hue due to extreme concentrations of dust particles or volcanic smoke suspended in Earth's atmosphere acting as a natural color filter.

🌕 Cultural Significance: While Blue Moons hold no extra mechanical gravity or astronomical effect on Earth, they are historically associated with good luck, magic, and mystical symbolism across various ancient global cultures.

When is the Next Blue Moon? (2026 Update)

The last iconic Blue Moon occurred on August 31, 2023. If you missed that beautiful night sky, you are in luck! The next highly anticipated Blue Moon is set to occur this year on August 31, 2026!

Interesting Facts about Blue Moons:

  • The first recorded use of the term "Blue Moon" dates back to the year 1580.
  • The mathematical average frequency of Blue Moons per century is roughly 2.3 years.
  • A rare double Blue Moon in a single calendar year can happen only about four times every century.

Keep Looking Up to the Stars!
